Anecephalic
fetuses (babies with abnormally small brains) and brain dead
fetus have no cardiac vagal tone. This is the only means of
assessing brain function in the uterus. Fetuses suffering insults
such as placental insufficiency will have increased cardiac
vagal tone above average. Babies suffering from asphyxia during
labour will have increased cardiac vagal tone above the normal
level during labour. |
