Benefits of measuring cardiac vagal tone in athletes

  • It provides an accurate measure of the degree of the brain's restraint of the heart, which can be used to indicate the strength and efficiency of the heart.


  • The linear unit in which cardiac vagal tone is measured allows serialisation of the responses of the heart to physical training, or to particular regimes of exercise. A training curve can be established for the athlete.


  • It helps the training instructor to design exercise that is most appropriate for improving cardiovascular performance of the athlete.


  • It provides individual athletes with their own numerical upper limits of cardiovascular performances or responses to exercise and prevents the over-training that can cause irregular heart beats and unfitness.
