Benefits
of measuring cardiac vagal tone in athletes
- It provides an accurate
measure of the degree of the brain's restraint of the heart,
which can be used to indicate the strength and efficiency
of the heart.
- The linear unit in which cardiac vagal tone is measured
allows serialisation of the responses of the heart
to physical training, or to particular regimes of exercise.
A training curve can be established for the athlete.
- It helps the training instructor to design exercise
that is most appropriate for improving cardiovascular
performance of the athlete.
- It provides individual athletes with their own numerical
upper limits of cardiovascular performances or
responses to exercise and prevents the over-training
that can cause irregular heart beats and unfitness.
- It indicates deterioration of cardiovascular performance
due to inappropriate or lack of exercises.
- Athletes can use it for numerical ranking of their
cardiovascular fitness. There is no such facility
at present in the world.
- It measures cardiac reserve by assessing cardiac
vagal tone (the higher the cardiac reserve, the
fitter the person)
