Currently heart rate is the
only index used to assess or quantify cardiovascular responses
to exercise or training. Heart rate is varied during exercise
in order to pump a desired volume of blood known as cardiac
output. A given heart rate can be achieved by either withdrawing
the "brake" effect of cardiac vagal tone (CVT),
or by increasing the accelerating effect of the sympathetic
nervous system.
These two different mechanisms
cannot be distinguished simply by measuring the heart rate.
